Afgelopen juni werd Jan Hopstaken niet meer herkozen tot voorzitter van IJshockey Nederland. Dat kon ook niet, want volgens de statuten van de sportbond zat zijn maximale bestuurstermijn van 12 jaar (waarvan ruim vijfeneenhalf jaar als voorzitter) erop. Dat kwam het bestuur van de Central European Hockey League goed uit. Zij waren namelijk al een tijdje op zoek naar een voorzitter zonder clubbelang. En in Jan Hopstaken denkt men die gevonden te hebben. Dus is het tijd deze in 1964 in Etten-Leur geboren en in Renkum wonende interim manager en strategisch adviseur nader voor te stellen. Jan Hopstaken en ijshockey; hoe is dat 12 jaar geleden ontstaan? Jan: “Ik werd destijds benaderd door het bureau Sport&Zaken van NOC*NSF, de overkoepelende Nederlandse sportorganisatie waarbij talloze sportbonden zijn aangesloten. Dat bureau was een soort headhunter voor sportbonden die op zoek waren naar nieuwe bestuurders van buiten de sport. Mijn keuze viel op de NIJB, omdat ik ijshockey van vroeger uit al een leuke sport vond.” Hij legt verder uit: “Vanuit Etten-Leur gingen we, toen we een jaar of 16 waren, af en toe met een groep jongens naar Tilburg om in de vroegere Pellikaanhal de Trappers te zien spelen. Later, toen ik in Enschede ging studeren, bezochten we wedstrijden van de studentenclub de Slapping Studs – waarbij het dozijn toeschouwers overigens vooral voor de vierde periode kwam. Daarnaast had ik een studievriend uit Nijmegen, dus heb ik in die tijd ook wedstrijden in de oude ijshal bij station Heyendaal bezocht en Vissers Nijmegen aan het werk gezien.” Toegetreden tot de bond in 2013, werd hij tijdens een Algemene Leden Vergadering in 2019 in Utrecht tot voorzitter gekozen, vlak voor corona uitbrak. Jan: “Ik zeg wel eens gekscherend dat ik de voorzitter met de minste wedstrijden ben…” Tijdens zijn periode als bestuurslid bij de bond maakte hij ook het ontstaan van de BeNe-League in 2015 van dichtbij mee. Daarbij bleek dat de samenwerking tussen IJshockey Nederland en de Belgische Bond soms zo uitdagend was dat uiteindelijk IJNL zich terugtrok en het besturen van de nieuwe League aan de KBIJF en de clubs overliet. “Ik heb dat altijd betreurd,” reageert Jan daarop. “De twee bonden en de BeNe-League zijn daarna ieder hun eigen weg gegaan. Toch is het mijn wens dat we weer meer met elkaar in gesprek gaan en blijven, en wellicht wat meer gaan samenwerken.” En als huidige CEHL-voorzitter zou hij daar zomaar een rol in kunnen gaan spelen, toch? Jan over zijn “overstap”: “Officieel ben ik op 4 juni j.l. gestopt bij IJshockey Nederland – waar ik overigens niet met ruzie ben wegegaan. Sterker nog, ik werk nog steeds samen met IJNL alleen niet meer als bestuurder. Op 5 juni werd ik al benaderd door Ron Lahay en Hub van Grinsven van de CEHL. Voor mij allebei geen onbekenden. Ik was zeer vereerd maar wilde echt eerst een maand rust voordat ik daar verder over in gesprek wilde. Met name ook omdat onze oudste dochter op het punt stond om te bevallen van ons eerste kleinkind en dat was mijn grootste prioriteit.” De CEHL wachtte precies een maand en zocht wederom contact. En met de geboorte van kleinzoon Joep achter de rug, ging Jan het gesprek aan over zijn mogelijke voorzitterschap. Was er een takenpakket? Of wat ziet hij zelf als zijn takenpakket? Jan: “Nou, op de eerste plaats is het goed om te vermelden waarom de CEHL op zoek was naar een nieuwe voorzitter en dat was niet omdat de vorige (Harry Vlaardingenbroek) niet voldeed. Harry was namelijk na het vertrek van de vorige voorzitter bedoeld als tijdelijke oplossing omdat hij tevens voorzitter is van Den Haag. Daar was het bestuur van de CEHL blij mee, maar was niet de ideale oplossing. Niet voor de League maar ook niet voor Harry. Ook al ben je nog zo objectief, en Harry is dat volgens mij, je kunt toch gemakkelijk de schijn van partijdigheid tegen je krijgen. Daarom wilde de League een voorzitter zonder clubbelang.” En die voorzitterstaken? Jan: “In de basis is het heel praktisch: een voorzitter zit vergaderingen voor. Hij is een gespreksleider. In de vergaderingen wordt met de clubs bekeken of de onderwerpen die de League van plan was te doen, gelukt zijn. Afhankelijk daarvan moet je beslissingen nemen. In mijn werk als interim manager begeleid ik verandertrajecten binnen grote overheidsorganisaties. Daartoe is het belangrijk om eerst het ritme van zo’n organisatie te leren kennen en van daaruit te kijken welke slag ze kunnen maken.” Hij vervolgt: “Daarom wil ik het eerste half jaar gewoon rondkijken binnen de League en de aangesloten clubs. Kijken wat er speelt. In mijn jaren bij IJshockey Nederland heb ik de verscheidenheid aan clubs leren kennen. Er zijn clubs die met meerjarenplannen werken en er zijn er die blij zijn als ze volgend jaar nog bestaan. Daar ben je als League van afhankelijk en hoe ga je daar dan mee om? Wat is goed voor het ijshockey, wat willen de clubs; maar vooral: wat kunnen ze?” Jan kijkt er naar uit om iedereen – beter – te leren kennen. De clubs uit Nederland zijn natuurlijk niet nieuw voor hem maar vooral bij de Duitse en Belgische clubs is nog een heleboel onbekend. Ook kijkt hij uit naar gesprekken met Marc Verlinden, de voorzitter van de Belgische Federatie, die een belangrijke partij is in het hele grensoverschrijdende ijshockeyverhaal van de CEHL. We kunnen dus binnenkort een soort Jan Hopstaken “On Tour” verwachten. Die gaat het druk krijgen, want naast het nieuw verworven CEHL-voorzitterschap heeft Jan ook nog zijn eigen adviesbedrijf en is hij sinds kort verbonden aan het Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport, waar hij werkt voor het onderdeel ESTT, een tuchtklachtcollege voor de gezondheidszorg dat de kwaliteit van die zorg bewaakt. Maar met al zijn ervaring in het zakenleven en o.a. bij IJNL is Jan gelukkig wel iets gewend. Volgens ingewijden een warm mens met een luisterend oor, en met oog voor de medemens. Game 7148 ended after 2 periodes due to an accident with the zamboni. According to the CEHL game regulations this game will be handled as being played. The game result will be fixed on the moment the game ended. 20. Cancellation or ending of a game a. Only the Board or the referee/RIC designated for the relevant game can cancel a scheduled game. b. The reasons for cancelling or ending a game can be: i. weather conditions during competitions on an open ice rink; ii. the condition of the ice; iii. technical malfunctions on the ice rink; iv. the lack of the necessary facilities on and around the playing field; v. lack of organization by the home playing team or club in relation to bench officials; vi. failure to appear at the rink of one or both teams; vii. a dangerous situation (slipperiness/very dense fog/heavy storm) on the roads: Teams have an obligation to perform to the best of their ability, even in case of less good weather conditions, to do all what is necessary to avoid that a game must be cancelled. If a weather alarm (code red or orange) is issued by the KNMI, KMI or DWD for an area through which a visiting team must travel, for the period of 6 hours prior to the match and/or a period of up to 3 hours after match, the visiting team is entitled, in consultation with the League Manager, not to travel. viii. \"sad\" circumstances. i. This past weekend two CEHL matches were played by the Leuven Chiefs. On Friday, September 27, the match between Mechelen Golden Sharks and Leuven Chiefs took place (final score 6-7) and on Saturday, September 28, the match between Leuven Chiefs and Diez Limburg was played (3-2 OT). Unfortunately, we have noticed that Leuven Chiefs acted against the CEHL competition regulations during these two matches by fielding more import player than allowed by the rules. Article 10 of the competition regulations contains the relevant provisions. Leuven Chiefs included four players who are considered as import players under the regulations: Jeremy Cote Erik Miller Tommy Lubin Matthijs Lievens As a result of this non-compliant action by the Leuven Chiefs, the board has decided that the match between Mechelen Golden Sharks and Leuven Chiefs will be converted to a 5-0 victory for Mechelen Golden Sharks and the match between Leuven Chiefs and Diez Limburg will be converted to a 0-5 victory for Diez Limburg. From the last weekend of September, the CEHL will start with 9 clubs -The Hague, Geleen and Heerenveen -Diez and Neuwied -Herentals, Leuven, Liège and Mechelen CEHL Competition structure consists of 2 parts: CEHL cup competition with semi-finals and a cup match in January 2025 CEHL championship from December with quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final series in March. Depending on the time needed for make-up games to be scheduled, the final series will be played in a Best of 3,5 or 7 Dutch Cup The matches of the Dutch Cup are played under the direction of IJshockey Nederland. These are not listed on the CEHL site. Belgian Cup The matches in the CEHL Cup between the Belgian clubs are kept in a separate Belgian Cup table to determine the ranking for the BVB. The semi-finals will be played at the beginning of December and the final on the 8th of February. The place where it will be played will be determined when the finalists are known. Referees Since the start of the competition, the participating countries have appointed the referees in their own country. In consultation, there have always been exchanges between the countries. For this season, IJshockey Nederland has announced that it will provide referees for the Dutch Cup matches and the friendly matches, but not for the CEHL. For Germany, the referees will be appointed by DEB, as in previous years. Later in the season, we will discuss whether more cooperation and exchange can be achieved here as well. We have found Patrick van de Wijgert willing to help us as RIC for the CEHL with the referees for CEHL competitions in the Netherlands and Belgium. Referees can indicate their availability via the CEHL website. The board of the CEHL and the RIC are of the opinion that it is important for the development of the referees that they referee as many matches as possible. Restricting the availability of referees is not in the interest of the sport. Therefore, as a CEHL board, we encourage referees that, in addition to the CEHL matches, referees also remain connected to the RBIHF / Ice Hockey Netherlands as a referee and can be used for matches. Supervision and development of referees has always been seen by CEHL as a federation duty for which the clubs contribute by paying contributions to both organizations.
